Rodney was born on October 11, 1944 in Hatfield, Herts. He signed as a youth amateur footballer with West Ham at 15 and signed professionally with Fulham one year later spending 5 years with the club.
During his time at Fulham, Rodney played with enough courage to have the hearing kicked out of one ear while in the act of heading a spectacular goal. The result: an outwardly engaging but personal lifetime habit of tilting his head to one side during conversation.
In search of greater appreciation of his extravagant skills, Rodney transferred across West London to Queens Park Rangers at age 21. There he was adored by the locals, instigated promotion through two divisions, becoming 3rd Division and 2nd Division Champions, and inspired triumph at Wembley in a League Cup Final. Rodney scored 44 goals in one season and a total of 134 goals in 242 appearances. He also played as a 3rd Division International, playing for his country, England and received an England cap with his 3rd division team – something which is unheard of in today’s profession. Rodney gained a total of 9 caps for England during his time with the squad.
In 1972, at age 27 Rodney went on to sign with Manchester City at a record breaking £200,000 transfer fee during that time.
Rodney left Manchester City in 1976 and led the exodus of international footballers to play in the North American Soccer League. He signed with the Tampa Bay Rowdies in 1976 and became the fan’s favourite, going on to captain his team. Rodney came back to play with Fulham alongside his good mates, George Best and Bobby Moore, which would be the last time they would all play together in England. Rodney returned to the States and played with the Rowdies until 1979 and went on to become player coach and then Chief Executive of the Club.
